Dave Brubeck has the honor of defying the standard 4/4 count that was before then, the standard in jazz and other music. In 1951 he started the Dave Brubeck Quartet that hinged on peculiar constantly changing rhythms with classical overtones and along with the smooth jazz sound of his saxophone player Paul Desmond, gave this pioneer of progressive jazz the tools to make it all work. A couple of prime examples of this unique musical structure can be found in Dave Brubecks, Blue Rondo A la Turk and Paul Desmonds, Take Five.
